World Champions of Chess History
Below is a listing of world Chess Champions dating back to 1490. The players listed before 1886 were identified as the leading chess masters of their time. Between 1886 and 1993 the players identified were the undisputed world champions. From 1993 to 2006 there was a split with FIDE and PCA or Classical World Chess Champion both having identified winners. In 2006, the world championship was reunified when Kramnik defeated Topalov to again identify an undisputed World Chess Champion. World Champions of Chess History.
