WGM – Women Grandmaster

The “WGM” acronym which stands for “Womens Grandmaster” is for the highest ranking female chess players and is also awarded by FIDE. There are slightly less than 200 Women Grandmasters worldwide, 11 of which are full GMs.

CM – Candidate Master

An “CM” or “Candidate Master” is awarded by FIDE to a chess player who has achieved a FIDE rating of over 2200. 

FM – FIDE Master

An “FM” or “FIDE Master” is awarded by FIDE to a chess player who has achieved a FIDE rating of over 2300. 

IM – International Master

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

An “IM” or “International Master” is a chess player who has achieved three norms which are represented by a favorable showing in 3 major tournaments with other IMs and GMs is awarded the title of IM by FIDE. 

GM – Grandmaster

The “GM” acronym which stands for “Grandmaster” is for the highest ranking for chess players and is awarded by FIDE. There are only approximately 1000 Grandmasters worldwide with the majority in Soviet or ex-Soviet states.
